Thought to be one of the country’s most eligible bachelors, the 15th president, James Buchanan, is said to have only two significant affectionate relationships in his life: one brief affair with Anne Coleman, and one two-decade liaison with William Rufus DeVane King, who became his vice president. "Between 1839 and 1842 Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed loved each other," says Kramer, who researched letters from both during that era. After 1842, they kept in touch. Both eventually married.
